On Monday September 26th, 2022, I travelled with my school to the University of Mobile to learn about their medical programs and explore their university campus. We met in their Hall where an acapella group sang a short introduction for us. We met with several of their Health Professionals that briefed us on their positions, and their experience teaching on campus. The Dean of Nursing: Dr. Witherspoon, Vice President of Academic affairs: Dr. Pamela, Undergraduate Chair: Mrs. Tammy Brown, Graduate Chair: Dr. Garner, University President :Dr. Burnett, Director of The Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Program: Dr. Hicks, and Director of the Master of Athletic Training program: Dr. Thomas all shared a summary of their duties and the on campus experience of UM in Martin Hall.
Following the introduction from the Health Professionals, Dr. Hughes and Mrs. Easter toured us around the Simulation Lab and OR room. We walked through a hallway simulating a hospital setting with multiple rooms with different scenarios set up. Each room had a Dummy patient that could be manipulated to show different symptoms and traits of illness. Dummys could blink, talk, lack pulse, wheeze, and mimic observable traits. they also had an OB simulation with VR headsets to help further illustrate real life scenarios concerning procedures in the OB room.
The rest of the duration we got to see the cadaver lab, sit in on a class lecture, and tour the rest of the university. My personal experience was very positive, I was impressed with the simulations lab more than anything. It mimics realistic scenarios to help saturate the knowledge and experience of persevering med students.
