What is a sports related concussion

A sports concussion is a traumatically induced transient disturbance of brain function. It is often not a deformity to the head but rather an altering in the way the brain is receiving and processing things. Only 33% of concussions are obtained through sporting instances and traumatic

How is it diagnosed?

Because concussions cannot be seen, you have to observe the symptoms and injuries that the patient is experiencing. It is all an objective diagnosis that is based of symptoms and mannerisms that the patient exhibits. Complaints of a migraine, slow processing, slow reaction, and nausea can all be major signs to a concussed patient. To diagnose a concussion, an eye exam is often performed. Eye reception correlates with good balance, so balance tests are used to determine cognitive ability.

Concussion treatment

  • rest for 24-48 hours

  • sub-symptom threshold exercise

  • Tylenol/painkillers

  • altered school schedule

  • possible physical therapy referral
