    • Stern- back end of boat

    • Port-left side

    • Terms are important for communication purposes

    • Gunwales - sides of ships

      • Do not step, stand, or sit on the gunwales

    • Mid ships are vertical to the stern

    • Beam- across the middle of the boat

    • From water line to the top of the gunwales is called free-water

    • Waterline to bottom of the boat is the draft

      • Typically have a lot of shallow water

    • You have green(sternum) and red(port) lights on the front of the boat

  • Safety equipment

    • Life jacket

    • Life preservers

      • Most of the time with recovery, they will have life jackets on

    • Two kinds of life jackets

      • Wearable life jacket

      • Throwable life jacket

    • Ships will usually tell you how to wear life jackets
